Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3 Review

Another classic character shows up to lend a hand.

Get your favorite pizza and get ready to read Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3 — then read it again because your mind will be blown.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

First off, writer Ryan Parrott is crafting an amazing story of epic proportions; this is right on the level of the classic crossover of DC vs Marvel — and we’ve even seen an “amalgam” of two characters so far!  Green Ranger Shredder is showing off his new power set and really taking it to Rita Repulsa as he squares off against her.  Shredder starts talking about the Green Ranger power and it’s very interesting to see his interpretation of it; it really gave me something to think about when the Rangers morph.  Along with Rita vs. Shredder we get to see the side kicks going at it and this issue proves once again not to underestimate Bebop and Rocksteady.  After the dust clears the bad guys decide to team up so they can stop all the heroes and a temporary pact is formed.

As for the heroes it was nice to see Splinter be involved in their talks; a great moment features Billy and Splinter ruminate on a philosophical question and Splinter has a seemingly perfect answer for both parties.  We see that Mikey gets pizza for everyone and of course Zach is the only one adventurous enough to try the crazy combinations while the other teens aren’t ready for it.  Trini and Raph have a great conversation about anger and some banter between the two really gets you to think about their inner struggles.  The issue isn’t all dialogue however as the action ramps up when Zordon finds Tommy’s location.

So, the big moment comes and we get to see the Power Rangers take on Green Ranger Shredder…WOW!  Simone di Meo and Alessio Zonno lay down art that is dynamic and shows off the skills of all these great ninjas involved.  I also want to take a moment and thank the colorists, Walter Baiamonte and Igor Monti, who keep all the characters and their colors correct and vibrant. Not only do we witness a great smackdown featuring the Rangers vs. Shredder, but the drama intensifies when the bad guys find a way to shut down the Rangers’ powers.  Who is going to help the Rangers now?

Enter an old friend of the Turtles. This was a nice surprise, and I can’t believe that I didn’t think about him entering the story arc. He did a great job and helped out the Rangers, but if the Rangers can’t use their powers, how will they stopped the combined bad guys?  Be sure to grab the latest issue of this crossover — it’s well worth your read, Rangers and TMNT fans.

Is it good?
An excellent issue that leaves you wanting more. The Rangers and Turtles team up is dynamic, fun and reminds you why you loved these two properties growing up. Another classic character joins the action and adventure awaits as the bad guys are on the rise.
Fun read, great interactions with characters, and worthwhile story
Amazing art showcasing the moves and styles of all the characters
That last page has a wild idea that I hope we get to see in action next issue
