Money Shot #4 Review

At a time when it feels like everything has been done before, Money Shot is a series that’s using science fiction clichés to build something new.

After being duped into assisting an alien warlord in destroying an entire rebel army, it’s now down to the XXX-plorers to try and take down said warlord, survive the inevitable gladiatorial arena and hopefully escape with their lives. The stakes were high in the last issue and in Money Shot #4 there’s still a lot to play for if our band of scientist protagonists are going to liberate the natives of Dry Reef before it’s too late.

Money Shot #4 Review

Still as ludicrous as ever and constantly unpredictable, Money Shot #4 picks up in the aftermath of last issues shocking conclusion…but not before we’re treated to a brief glimpse of how the last issue was viewed by a member of Money Shot’s online following. It’s not the opening pages I was expecting, and I think that’s one of the best things about this series — it’s never what you expect it to be. Filled with wonderfully executed jokes, action, and completely out of the blue moments of emotion, I don’t feel like it’s much of a stretch to say that Money Shot is one of the most rewarding reads in recent memory.

Money Shot #4 Review

Once again, I haven’t got a bad thing to say about Rebekah Isaac’s artwork or Kurt Michael Russell’s coloring — they’re an excellent team and throughout this issue they continue to demonstrate that. With great variety between character designs and wonderful range of facial expressions, every panel of this issue is packed with energy and emotion.

I’m aware that I’m repeating a lot of the same praise I had for the previous installment of Money Shot, but honestly that’s a testament to just how consistent Money Shot is. At a time when it feels like everything has been done before, Money Shot is a series that’s using science fiction clichés to build something new at every opportunity, never shying away from its influences while constantly subverting expectations.

Money Shot #4
Is it good?
Money Shot has been an unpredictable journey so far. It’s a comedy, sci-fi, sex comic that always keeps you guessing, and if you ask me it hasn’t missed a beat so far.
Brilliant artwork and colouring from Isaacs and Russell, respectively.
Unpredictable storytelling.
Relentlessly funny, and action packed, with surprising moments of genuine emotion.
