Tartarus #1

Words by Johnnie Christmas. Art by Jack T. Cole.

I’d say is that this book is a mix of two of my favorite Ryan Gosling movies, The Place Beyond the Pines and Blade Runner 2049. What’s cool about this book is that it really goes through the motions by giving both contemplative and subtle characters, while still managing to maintain itself within the genre. A really fun book that managed to enthrall me into the sci-fi genre. I just wish I had the next issue! (10/10)

Undone by Blood #1

Words by Zac Thompson & Lonnie Nadler. Art by Sami Kivela.

This story is one of the finest Westerns I’ve read in a long time. Cormac McCarthy fans are going to love this. This series manages to capture the aesthetic and themes of his finest novels and brings powerful visuals equal to Tom Ford and the Coen Brothers. Its only fault is that readers have to wait another month for the next issue. But, patience is a reward with this series. A compelling story, wholly unique and adding greater depth to the comics medium. (10/10)

Alienated #1

Words by Simon Spurrier. Art by Christian Wildgoose.

Alienated #1 packs a lot of potential for what will likely be yet another incredible series from BOOM! Studios and all of the creators. It feels intensely personal yet still geared for a wide audience, and I cannot wait to see where it goes. (9.5/10)

X-Force #7

Words by Benjamin Percy. Art by Oscar Bazaldua.

If you are a fan of espionage films, or straight up just Domino, this is a great comic for you. Even if you don’t know much about the X-Men, this is an easy self-contained story that any reader can follow. Aside from the spy bits, it deals with trauma and PTSD. Being a superhero is hard, and some really messed up stuff can happen. This comic doesn’t shy away from that. In conclusion: I want more Domino and Sage, 007 style. (9.5/10)

The Batman’s Grave #5

Words by Warren Ellis. Art by Bryan Hitch.

This series continues to prove a high budget TV show would work if given plots that seem thin, but are in fact detailed in their production and sub plotting. Hitch and Ellis continue to amaze me at how layered you can make a comic while on the surface it all looks so simple. (9.5/10)
