Falcon & Winter Soldier #1 Review

Two former Captain Americas team up to put a stop to a hard-edge killer.

Falcon & Winter Soldier is a new mini-series that takes Captain America supporting characters and puts them in a buddy cop-style tea- up that starts off on the right foot.  It is nice to see more of the Winter Soldier in comics and having him team up with Falcon is just extra icing on that cake.  Looking at the upcoming covers and solicits for future issues, there looks to be some promise as to how far the depth of this series will go.  Let us explore this team-up of these former Captains.

Marvel Comics

The opening pages have been shown in previews for the issue and the action is just perfect — a nice lure to get fans to check this out.  I love how Bucky is trying to find peace with meditation at the start of this issue. It was real nice to call out the dual natures of the Winter Soldier of his constant battle with war and peace.  Artist Federico Vicentini does a great job with the layouts for the action sequence on the siege of Bucky’s home.  Brutal and ruthless they come at Bucky, but they need to remember the Winter Soldier is no pushover. It’s quite the sight to see him defend himself.

Marvel Comics

Falcon’s intro and why he is on the search is perfect as Sam Wilson is a man who cares. He is on the search for a missing member of his Veteran’s Support Group and has a strong lead that crosses paths with Bucky.  Writer Derek Landy creates a great situation to have the two main characters team up. I really like the way Derek handles their personalities, but I did find it funny that Sam and Bucky seem to have a little animosity towards each other.  I can see it fitting in since we discover that Bucky is working as a Government hitman, but I figure with what all these men have been through, there would be a stronger bond.

With that part out of the way, we are introduced to the conflict of the series: a young sadist fan of the two heroes who is a Hydra assassin.  During the battle between Sam and Bucky with this “Kid,” he starts to reveal some of his motivations and obsessions with these men and being a good soldier.  It is an interesting concept that makes you want to know more about this character, such as how he is able to beat the living daylights out of these two heroes.  Does the “Kid” have enhancements, or maybe he’s even a super soldier of some sort?  The only drawback for me is that this hook seems very similar to the recent Winter Solider mini-series from Kyle Higgins and Rod Reis about Bucky dealing with kid soldiers, but to see great characters in action I’ll continue to press on.

Is it good?
So far, this series is a great way to increase interest for the upcoming Disney Plus show featuring a great buddy cop duo, but the hook seems very similar to the last Winter Soldier mini. Overall a fun read to keep us entertained till the show arrives.
Derek Landy does a great job with the personalities of Sam and Bucky
Federico Vicentini does a great job with action layouts to keep the fight scenes in strong motion
The hook of the book is going to be similar to Winter Soldier fans if they read his last miniseries
8.5
Great
