Disney’s upcoming live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries has officially received a new working title, “Pilgrim.” The title likely references Kenobi’s pilgrimage to Tatooine following the events of Revenge of the Sith, where he lives secretly in exile and works to learn the ability to become a Force Ghost while watching over a young Luke Skywalker. The report of the new working title comes to us from Production Weekly.
While the release date may be a bit far off still (rumored for Spring 2021) the anticipation for the project remains extremely high among fans. After years of rumors and unconfirmed reports, the series was officially announced during the 2019 D23 Expo to an immediate and overwhelmingly positive reaction from fans (people lost their minds).
Following the initial announcement Kathleen Kennedy stated that fans wouldn’t have to wait long to see the famous Jedi in action, as the scripts for the series were complete and production was slated to begin in summer 2020. Unfortunately things have changed substantially since Kennedy’s initial production estimate. The series is now going through a complete rewrite as reports indicate that Kennedy and Disney brass were unhappy with the creative direction the story took and due to that filming has been delayed by several months.
There’s several unconfirmed rumors that Obi-Wan won’t be alone on Tatooine. We know Owen and Beru Lars, Luke’s adoptive aunt and uncle, along with the future hero of the Rebel Alliance are neighbors of General Kenobi. So it’s not unreasonable to expect that we may see a young Luke Skywalker on screen, but that’s not exactly a newsworthy rumor. Now, Jar Jar Binks, that’s someone you wouldn’t expect to find on a desert planet.
Binks visited Tatooine alongside Obi-Wan in the past and left the planet with a young Anakin Skywalker in tow. A new report claims that Binks will return to Tatooine and may just be a sporting a beard.
“I’m told ‘Ben’ Kenobi crosses paths with his old friend from Naboo, Jar Jar Binks,” said Jason Ward, Editor-in-Chief of Making Star Wars. “Early work has been conducted for the CGI Gungan’s return to Star Wars. Jar Jar has a beard to reflect where he’s been and what his life has been like since they were all deceived by a great lie that ushered in the first Galactic Empire. Kenobi will not be the only bearded character this time.”
Ultimately, regardless of who Obi-Wan encounters on Tatooine, we’re still getting Ewan McGregor back in the iconic role, and really, that’s the most important thing to remember here.
