An assassin who travels through time and a member of the French Resistance, destined to cross paths in 1944, but what will happen when Maya and Virginia come face to face?
Changing the events of the second world war with a bit of time travel isn’t a new idea, but it is rare that we see a story about an effort being made to hinder the Allies’ progress. There are a few examples that come to mind, but it’s definitely a lesser travelled route. In the case of Artemis & The Assassin, we’re faced with the question: what if a time travelling assassin was tasked with removing someone integral to the Allied war effort in WWII?
Now, I’m a sucker for a time travel story, so the premise behind Artemis & The Assassin was always going to pique my interest. Although it’s a simple subversion of an idea, it makes for an entirely different take on a frequently discussed time traveling concept. This is a really good opening issue that seamlessly melds together the science fiction and historical elements of the story. As an opening issue both Maya and Virginia have excellent, action-packed introductions, which showcase exactly who they both are and immediately sets the scene for what’s to come. With the stage set and the main and supporting characters introduced, I’m interested to see where Stephanie Phillips is planning to take the joint protagonists.
There’s no shortage of positive representation here in Artemis & The Assassin. It’s great to see not only two female protagonists, but also a protagonist with a disability, which is something still sadly shied away from in a lot of media.
The art team of Francessa Fantini, Meghan Hetrick and Lauren Affe work superbly together, bringing great energy to action sequences and wonderful life and expression throughout the issue.
With an unlikely team up between Maya and Virginia Hall on the cards, a solid creative team and a premise that instantly appealed to me, I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
