Sonic the Hedgehog #27 Review

Reading about a viral outbreak pandemic in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe is certainly weird when paired up with real world events.

The latest issue of Sonic the Hedgehog is a harrowing tale in light of the worldwide pandemic sweeping the planet.

After creating a virus that would infect any organic matter by transforming it into metal, Dr. Eggman has found himself working with Sonic to prevent the spread of the virus. His plan to reconstruct all animals and people into robots has backfired as the pandemic sweeps the planet, turning everything into immortal robotic zombies. On top of this pandemic, the Deadly Six have their hands on the Chaos Emeralds. This being a story within the Sonic the Hedgehog universe, we know that everything is going to be okay, which is what I keep telling myself every day.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

As these zombie-like robots groan and trample their way through cities in masses, our heroes are also facing the Deadly Six. It certainly feels like a video game in this light, fighting off hordes of enemies while also attempting to complete a boss battle. That translates very well to the pages in this comic book.

This particular story focuses on a team-up with Tails and Amy Rose, who we rarely see paired up as a team. These two characters relate directly to Sonic, so it’s nice to see his sidekicks working together. It’s also a combination I now want to play in the video game, so hopefully SEGA picks up on this and pairs these two together in a playable fashion. Flying and hitting enemies with a massive hammer? Sure. Why not!

We also get to see Cream battle alongside a robot, Gemerl, who has been turned against her in her attempt to reclaim a Chaos Emerald. In her typical sappy fashion, Cream is able to reason with the robot with love and peace. Unfortunately for her she is infected by the virus, but in a very touching moment Gemerl flies into the sky and promises to keep her safe until she is better.

Reading about a viral outbreak pandemic in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe is certainly weird when paired up with real world events. Obviously SEGA and its writers had not intended for this, so it’s just strange timing — however, this is one of those instances where we can see an apocalyptic virus take over the world but also know that it will be okay. And like Sonic, we are also developing a plan to fight!

Is it good?
While the lead-up to this story had been a bit lackluster, the story turns around when these teams work together to save their planet. The stakes are pretty high, and while much of the reasoning as to why any of it's happening in the first place makes little to no sense, the story is playing out in a way that's fun and even gives us hope during a time in which we are fighting our own viral pandemic.
Tails + Amy Rose is a teamup I never knew I wanted!
Incredibly touching moment between Cream and Gemerl, aka a talking bunny and a robot.
The Deadly Six having the Chaos Emeralds in this doesn't make a lot of sense beyond being a glorified boss battle.
