Wonder Woman 1984 delayed to August

We’ll have to wait a little longer for the highly anticipated sequel.

While perhaps unsurprising, it’s now official: Wonder Woman 1984‘s release date has been pushed back by Warner Bros. from June 5th to August 14th due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement to Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich said: “When we greenlit Wonder Woman 1984, it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on Aug. 14. We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then.”

This is in contrast to the strategy some movie studios are employing, as many movies that were in theaters when the pandemic began to spread in the United States were moved to digital platforms far ahead of schedule. In addition to accelerating digital releases after theatrical releases, some studios are looking into digital-first releases in this new reality.

Wonder Woman 1984 is the anticipated sequel to Wonder Woman, the third-highest grossing movie of 2017 and widely regarded as the best installment in the DC Extended Universe family of movies.

Wonder Woman 1984 is now set for an August 14th release date, assuming the pandemic has been quelled by then.
