Justice/Doom War reaches its third chapter this week as Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Howard Porter deliver a war that takes place in three timelines involving every hero and villain imaginable. It’s huge in scope and everything is on the line. In this third part the war in the past and war in the future come to a head, but can Lex even be stopped? Judging by the first few pages of this issue the answer is a definitive no.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“The Justice Doom War” part three! Things are getting dangerous across the time stream. On one side of time, the Justice League team finds heroic purpose; on the other, it’s a future full of chaos and trial. It’s the Totality in action. If they can’t stop Lex’s Legion across all fronts, there may be only one other option: embrace Doom!

Why does this matter?

Leave it to Snyder and Tynion to school us on big event storytelling. Year of the Villain has been filled with interesting one-shots and big storytelling and this issue is no different. Surprise twists and the fate of the universe is on the line here people!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Justice League #32 Review

The heroes are doomed!

This issue is all about the fight the Justice League is undertaking to win. They’re outmatched now that the villains are powered up, but they still have heart and a drive to never give up. Every hero gets a chance to take part in the battle be it the past set in Pearl Harbor or the future in New York. It all builds towards a rousing speech from Wonder Woman about how you don’t ever fight alone if you’re fighting for what is right. Hear, hear!

Scenes with Lex Luthor may steal the show however as he hurtles ever forward to the edge of the universe. These scenes remind us how powerful Lex and Perpetua are as well as focus on the space side of the story. While characters are duking it out in the past against World War II plans and others are fighting in the future against sci-fi forces the scenes in space remind us this battle is for all the marbles.

This is partly thanks to Howard Porter’s pencils which draw the Anti-Monitor, Perpetua, and Lex so well. These are humanoid figures but they are godlike and impressively rendered. The size of Perpetua and the Anti-Monitor are great too. They’re larger than life just like this story.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

Don’t me wrong I love Porter’s work and I sing him praises above, but the style is a dramatic switch from Jorge Jimenez’s style. It’s a tad cartoony, a bit rough here and there, and generally less atmospheric. It’s bright and positive in its line rather than the moody and dramatic Jimenez gave us last month. It threw me off a bit here.

Is it good?

A good third part in an epic tale to save the universe. This issue has plenty of action as it inches forward each plot towards the eventual showdown we’ve all been waiting for.
