‘Daredevil’ #2 adds an intriguing paternal element

Daredevil isn’t just a priest now, but a guardian to a group of kids.

It’s not every day you can call a new series starting at #1 using a legacy character “brand new”, but in the case of Daredevil, it’s true. Matt Murdock no longer a lawyer but a priest, and he’s also lost many of his memories. Now living in a youth home and acting as a guardian to a group of kids, Matt must navigate new realizations about his abilities and previous life while doing the right thing in the eyes of God. In Daredevil #2, the tights come back on, but Matt learns soon enough he can’t go full vigilante.

Daredevil #2 opens with Matt standing back to back with Daredevil in front of a beautiful stained glass window. Artist Aaron Kuder continues to bring his A-game right off the bat, allowing writer Saladin Ahmed to dance captions purposefully down the page. Even the cool framing using metalwork in red adds to the layout of the first page. That framing continues onto the second page when Matt observes cops stopping outside the home before making a decision. He can’t complete Daredevil just yet and must act as a good priest.

A tense scene with the cops continues from there. Ahmed does a great job capturing the edgy moment while Kuder keeps the cop’s wary eyes at the corners of the scene. Some key info is imparted about some of the kids staying at the home. When this info is paired with a genuine scene between Matt and a boy at home who is being bullied at school, one can see a paternal aspect of Daredevil we haven’t seen. Matt is a priest but also a caregiver, and that’s an intriguing angle to explore further.

It’s not long before the tights come back on, and Daredevil is striking fear into the hearts of violent gang members. The action is intense, and Kuder does a fantastic job capturing the agility of Daredevil we don’t often see. The new gang is likely building towards a future confrontation, but as it stands, it’s more of a bit of necessary action in a superhero book.

If you’re wondering about demons, there’s only a quick reminder of the one from the last issue. Instead, Ahmed appears to be setting up another to be dealt with, and it may be inside a close confidant of Daredevil. It’s a juicy reveal, albeit a quieter way to end a cliffhanger.

It’s an exciting time to be a Daredevil fan, largely because the character is on a new path of fatherly responsibilities of a priest but also a guardian. Paired with Kuder’s great fight choreography and action you have the makings of another epic run to go down in history.
