Right out of the gate, Gerry Duggan and Javier Garron have put a new avenging superhero group on the losing side. The Unity Squad is the team name in Uncanny Avengers, and Captain America is their leader, but for how long? As we see in Uncanny Avengers #2, maybe not as long as one might think.
Uncanny Avengers #2 opens with Captain Krakoa standing over Captain America, writhing in pain. His arm was just broken, and his team isn’t necessarily winning a superhero vs. supervillain fight. The trouble is, optics matter, as the world assumes he’s on the wrong side. He’s got a team of mutants fighting to stop Orchis, who can’t seem to stop winning. Captain Krakoa works for them in secret to make the world hate mutants more, but the identity of Captain Krakoa remains unclear. That’s just one of a few mysteries you’ll uncover as this issue unfolds.
This issue is much lighter on action, although Quicksilver does get to shine in one scene. No, this mostly lays the groundwork for an espionage-style fight, as we see when Steve Rogers meets up with Ben Urich. Most of this issue focuses on the team licking their wounds, contesting Captain America as the leader, and then seeing some table-setting moments unfold. That includes a nuclear weapon gearing up to blow and the villains being perplexed by those actions.
The real meat of this issue is setup, and one can see it’s a big build-up to proving Captain America is the real deal. You see the groundwork through Deadpool of all characters. A Captain America lover through and through, he gives a compelling speech to Rogue and the other mutants about how mutants keep losing wars. So why ditch one of the best tacticians during wartime? It’s a solid argument made brutally by drumming up the losses mutants have taken. Duggan seems to be arguing mutants need a strong leader to succeed, although Cyclops fans would likely disagree.

Black Widow makes a strong appearance if you’re keeping track of who is on this team. Garron gets to showcase her being a total badass when she’s revealed saving Captain America’s life. There are some members of this team that don’t quite jive, and one can assume they’ll need to get their groove by the end to win the day. This is a miniseries, after all.
Uncanny Avengers #2 is a good issue when setting things up. The bigger story of Captain America being a chosen leader, rather than one the mutants are stuck with, is a compelling one that’ll be fun to see play out. That said, this issue doesn’t have much excitement and bite as the opening issue.
